    ABOUT Ativan

Ativan, also known by its generic name lorazepam, is a prescription medication belonging to the benzodiazepine class. It is primarily used to treat anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder. Ativan works by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter in the brain that promotes relaxation and reduces abnormal brain activity.

In addition to anxiety disorders, Ativan may also be used to manage symptoms of insomnia, seizures, alcohol withdrawal, and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

  • Dosage:

The dosage of Ativan (lorazepam) can vary depending on several factors, including the condition being treated, the individual's age, weight, and overall health. However, here are general guidelines for typical dosages of Ativan:
    • For anxiety disorders: Initial dose: 2 to 3 mg per day, divided into two to three doses. Maintenance dose: 1 to 2 mg, two to three times daily.
    • For insomnia due to anxiety: 2 to 4 mg at bedtime.
    • For preoperative sedation: 2 to 4 mg given 1 to 2 hours before surgery.
    • For alcohol withdrawal: 2 to 4 mg given three to four times daily.
    • For status epilepticus (severe, prolonged seizures):4 mg given slowly intravenously, may repeat if necessary.

    Side Effects:

    • Common side effects of Ativan may include drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, headache, confusion, and blurred vision. Other potential side effects include memory problems, slurred speech, nausea, constipation, changes in appetite, and difficulty concentrating. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, it's important to inform your healthcare provider.
